I. Introduction/Background:
Ipas Africa Alliance (the Alliance) is a non-profit organization that works in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania to enhance the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls. In Rwanda, the Alliance works with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to increase women’s ability to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights including access to comprehensive abortion care services. using multiple strategies including assessments and dialogue, stigma reduction, the use of media and technology and working with youth champions.
In Kenya county referral hospitals conduct pre-service, internships and residential training for doctors. Ipas plans to support 5 county referral hospitals to develop and support implementation of a standardized protocol for abortion care, which will be integrated into pre-service education, internships, and residency training for doctors. This will be a joint endeavor bringing together key stakeholders in the development of medical education curricula, to ensure harmonization of the key elements of the standardized protocol. Developing a standardized clinical protocol is a strategic because it addresses a crucial gap in the current medical training programs, fostering a new generation of healthcare professionals who are both technically proficient and empathetic towards patients seeking abortion care. By standardizing protocols and promoting values clarification, we will enhance the quality of abortion care, reduce stigma, and ultimately improve health outcomes for women.
